    “Design shouldn’t be personal…”

OK, that’s just crap! I think the saying is usually completed with…” if you want to make money.” Right?

Well, while debate continues to go on I want to share some new work I’m having fun doing that does have a personal meaning to me. I love jazz music and singing it. Recently I’ve volunteered to work on promoting a network of live vocal jazz performers in the DC metropolitan area. These singers are from all walks of life and my friends.

The series is every Thursday night at Blair Mansion just off of Georgia Ave. (Go to blairmansion.com for the full schedule.) While I’m not a part of this first group I expect to be singing on Sept. 10th or later in the fall. My plan is to showcase a combo of visuals and music… but I’m not saying more until I literally get my act together. Meanwhile here’s the poster.

“Design shouldn’t be personal, if you want to make money.” I think thats an interesting quote Gregg. It’s surprising that as creative thinkers we sometimes put up walls or “designer” rules that can hinder our potential. The lines have been blurred between a designer and an artist, designers are now able to express their individuality in a project through style (ex. decorationalism, maximalism) and other “artistic” aesthetics. I also find it funny that designers who have taken their design practices and have applied them to fine art media, are now either famous or thought leaders within their community (ex. Stefan Sagmeister, Ryan McGinness, Takashi Murakami, Marian Bantjes, Jonathan Barnbrook, Shepard Fairey, M/M, etc.) It’s every designers dream to be the client and designer, I say, long live personal design!

I am not even sure what the quote means…. I think there is a difference between art and design- art is totally personal. Design has constraints and normally a client. But design can be art. I actually do not think it is really related to a profit motif- but more to the fact that design is different than art in that is has to solve a problem normally. And designers can be artists. No doubt about that. And artists can be designers. I just think that personal design falls into the category of art.
